I've been using Macs since 84 -- and I'm on my 6th ibook/macbook whatever. I own a small business which has been Mac only for years -- currently 9 imacs, 8 emacs, 2 macbooks, 4 iphones... (That said, I was also one of the first Windows users and a Novell admin years back, so I'm not afraid of Wintel -- I just prefer Mac for a variety of reasons -- especially the simplicity of support for my company.) Oh yeah, and I had my first ipod when it was version 2.0 (with all of 5GB) -- and I used it primarily as an external hard drive that happened to play music through my car's speakers

So I sound completely loopy - I HATE my iphone. The only thing redeemable about it is that I can view my stores via Safari which I makes it tolerable. And, I'll admit I like the GPS find me function. Other than that, I think its a tease. Almost a laptop but not quite -- and too huge for a cellphone. I'm not a sheep. I'm a non-conformist. I do what make sense for me, not because its cool -- because its right.

The iphone is ok -- but I'd toss it in half a second for a smaller phone, a nano and a mac netbook. And btw Apple -- I'm done after this with Macbooks. I travel all the time between 2 stores and 2 coasts -- but I'm just going to get two nice 24/27" imacs with a 23" external monitors. And if Mac does not come out with a netbook soon, looks like we will be buying 4 HPs Minis in the next few months. I thought about doing a hackintosh -- even spoke with someone to set it up for me -- but after reading this, it sounds smarter just to leave it as it.

We really don't care what OS it has. We'd just be using the browser anyway...and if we have to use MS Office, Excel is excel, Word is Word -- so who the hell cares.

I just want something small and lightweight that I'm willing to carry if I go to a meeting.

I'm NOT willing to carry my laptop any longer. Its anachronistic.

And, I'm not a kid -- the iphone is nice, but give me a nano phone with a video camera and a mac netbook and I'll be much happier.

Just an opinion at 4am from a true believer machead who remembers and owns/owned SE/30, Color Classic, FX, Quadra, PowerComputing, G3, G4, G5, Bondi Blue, eMac, imac with Tilt/Pivot, and now 20" and 24" imacs. But hell, what do I know anyhow...

And so on. Arguably the IA needs the info in order to keep their archive of the Internet intact, to help patch over a problem inherent in their own scraping of millions of web pages containing third-party shortened URLs in links. There is plenty already written elsewhere about the many other problems with URL shorteners.

There are a few other problems with these services: crap programming can mean the URL you thought you were pasting doesn't actually go where you wanted it to. Systems failures can be worse than downtime if you lose part or all of your database. Funneling traffic through these sites has privacy implications. And so on.

I'm also not convinced that there's not better things the Internet Archive could be doing with their finite cash, but that's a handwavy thing.

Nuts. Please forgive the tense switching above.

And I was glad to see that the batteries in PC laptops bug someone else the way they bug me. When I bought my netbook after many years of Macs, I couldn't believe that anyone could have been so stupid as to screw up something so simple. It was one of those moments when you see that you've been taking something really elegant for granted. It's just obvious, after all: a notebook should open like a book, with one hand and no pinching at a smooth hinge.

C'est tout.

Thanks for this. You write very well, and you seem to have your priorities in order--or in the same order as me, at least.

You've thoroughly convinced me to not hack my netbook. I've been interested in doing so for some time, but I am wary of upkeep and worry. I want my netbook to work, like my Mac just works.

Oddly, this wariness led me to Ubuntu. I didn't want to pay $100 to keep my $200 computer free of malware, so I didn't want XP. I had previously found Ubuntu maddeningly over-hyped in the past; it's just the sort of OS that hardware hackers would love and users would hate.

But things have changed. The netbook remix of their newest release (9.10) really works well. It installed as if it belonged there all along and has so far ticked by just fine with (almost?) no problems.

I say this as someone, like you, who is an interested amateur. You might consider giving it a shot should you tire of wonky resized windows.

Anyway, thanks again.

The tags have to use curly braces, not parentheses, and there should be no spaces within the tags. So your example should read <em>{audio}http://acordesdevida.ok.pe/home/modules/mod_mp3player_files/mp3/Aborto.mp3{/audio}</em>

P - unfortunately the 1PixelOut player is not compatible with the sort of user control and security measures that the sites you link to use. It has to be able to access MP3 files that any user can also access if they figure out the URL.

I love this player, is there anyways I can add code into it somewhere that it will play an mp3 file embedded in background? I want it to appear as though he mp3 file is tagged.

for example:

www.rocb[delete]attle.com or
www.vo[delete]te4beats.com

when you press play, it plays the desired song, but it also plays a security tag in the background to prevent online streaming.

Can I embed something like this on my page

and then have the pixelout player call on it to play and stop when someone presses the play and stop buttons on the player?

like define it in the xml file, then add it to the action buttons in javascript?

I'm totally new to this whole concept and I would love for you to tell me how to do this.

Thanks again!
